Message from the HoD

Thank you for your visit to the information page of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (DESE), School of Science, Kathmandu University (KU). KU was established in November 1991 as an autonomous, not-for-profit, non-governmental public institution dedicated to maintaining high standards of academic excellence. The DESE is a pioneer department of School of Science, KU which started few programs first in Nepal. Our missions are to produce professionals with sound theoretical and practical background in environmental processes, problems and issues through an integrated systems approach; and to develop personnel with specialized knowledge in water and wastewater management, solid waste management, air pollution and control, applied research and development, and impact assessment.

The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science program, the first such program in Nepal, was launched by KU in August 1996. Similarly, the graduate study program in Environmental Science and Natural Resources (M. Sc. ENR) was started in 2000, and the Master in Technology (M. Tech.) in Environmental Engineering was started in 2016. The M. S. by Research in Glaciology program started from September 2011 in the department is also a unique and first in South Asia. The department has produced 140 Master-level, 5 M. Phil. and 26 Ph. D. graduates till 2018.

The DESE is committed to the quality education with the firsthand practical and field knowledge through field visits and dedicated faculties in specified duration such as the B. Sc. in Environmental Science and Bachelor in Technology (B. Tech.) in Environmental Engineering in four years, M. Sc. in Environment and Natural Resources (M. Sc. ENR) and Master in Technology in Environmental Engineering (M. Tech in ENE) programs in two years, M. Phil. Program in one and half years and the Philosophy of Doctoral program in three years for full time students and in four years for part time students.

DESE has environmental analysis laboratory for air and water pollution, soil testing, waste analysis, biogas testing etc. It is equipped with sophisticated equipment such as Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS), UV Spectrophotometer, Sky-radiometer, Air Quality Monitoring Station, GIS and Computing Facility, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Differential GPS, Remote control echo-sounder, Automatic Weather Station, and a research site in Manang district with hydrological, meteorology, climatological and glaciological research setups. The DESE has active collaborations with more than 40 national and international academic/research/industrial institutions. We welcome all qualified applicants for the undergraduate, graduate, M. Phil. and Ph. D. programs in different themes.
